Making Disciples. Making a Difference
Believers' Chapel began in February of 1979 with one goal in mind: to be a church who was committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to use us to make disciples. While methods of ministry have changed over time the call of Jesus has not. We find this call in the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:18 "Jesus came and said to His disciples All Authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I commanded you, and remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Jesus made the mission of the CHURCH very clear. He called us to make disciples. He didn't call us to make converts, create programs, or stay busy doing religious activities. He called us to actively love people and invest our lives into them. Jesus was the greatest disciple maker who ever lived. Our desire is to follow His methods of making disciples in the context of relationships.
When Jesus was walking down the beach one day he approached his disciples and began to teach them from the boat. When he was done he performed a miracle that had such an impact on two men that they left everything to follow Him. This is the same impact that Jesus wants to have on each one one us. We catch a glimpse of the call of Jesus in the following verse.
Matthew 4:19 "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men."
In order to make DISCIPLES it is important that we have a unified definition of a disciple. This verse gives us a simple but clear definition of a disciple.
FOLLOW ME: Jesus calls us to follow Him. This means that we will go where he goes and do what he asks us to do.
A disciple is someone who FOLLOWS Jesus.
I WILL MAKE YOU: Jesus promises to change us. As we follow Him and do what He asks, He will transform our hearts and behavior.
A disciple is someone who is being CHANGED by Jesus.
FISHERS OF MEN: Jesus invites us to join His mission. As our hearts are transformed from following Jesus and allowing Him to changes us, He uniquely calls and gifts each one of us so we can join Him in the work He is doing in the world.
A disciple is someone who joined the MISSION of Jesus.
At Believers' Chapel we define a disciple as someone who FOLLOWS Jesus, is being CHANGED by Jesus, and who is joining the MISSION of Jesus.
Making a Difference
Matthew 22:37-39, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest commandment. The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
In order to make a difference we have to love God with our entire being. We also have to love others. This means that in order to grow as a disciple and to make a difference we have to be in relationships with others. When we commit to doing together around this vision there is no limit to what God will be able to do through us.
When we are personally growing as a disciple of Jesus and we are intentionally reaching out to make disciples of others, God will use us to make a difference in our community.
